While Vietnam has made strides in sports in recent years, its performance at major events like the Olympics and Asian Games remains modest. At the Olympics, Vietnam’s results have been inconsistent and on a downward trajectory. For instance, at the 2012 London Olympics, 18 Vietnamese athletes qualified, and the country took home one bronze medal in weightlifting. In contrast, at the 2016 Rio Olympics, 23 athletes participated, winning one gold and one silver medal in shooting, thanks to the impressive performance of Hoang Xuan Vinh. However, this success did not continue at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics or the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, with Vietnam sending fewer athletes and failing to secure any medals. The ink-and-gouache on silk painting La famille dans le jardin  (The Family in the Garden) by Le Pho (1907-2001) sold for HK$18.6 million (US$2.369 million) at Sotheby’s Hong Kong’s ‘50th Anniversary Modern Evening Auction’. The 1938 painting, which measures 91.3cm-by-61.5cm, is the artist’s second largest figurative work to go up for auction. It was signed ‘Le Pho’ in English and Chinese, stamped with the artist’s seal on the lower right corner. The painting was accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by the artist’s son, Alain Le Kim. This year’s edition, titled ‘Land, Rivers, and Mountains Create a Strip – Hope for Victory’ is one of Vietnam’s largest cycling tourneys. The race is set to bring together the country’s strongest teams, including Ho Chi Minh-Vinama, Loc Troi Group, Dong Thap Domesco Pharmaceuticals, Military Zone 7, Hanoi, Kenda Dong Nai, and Binh Minh Binh Duong Plastics.
