The Threads of Hanoi’s History
THE HANOI CHRONICLE — Art enthusiasts and cultural explorers alike are invited to embark on a captivating journey through Hanoi’s vibrant tapestry, as depicted by renowned artist Tran Thanh Thuc in her latest exhibition, “Fabric Tells Its Stories.” Currently adorning the walls of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, this collection showcases the artist’s unique perspective on the city’s rich heritage and charm.

Marking Thuc’s third solo exhibition, this event is a testament to her nearly four-decade-long artistic career. Unconventional in her approach, Thuc forgoes the traditional paintbrush, opting instead for pre-printed pieces of fabric that she meticulously composes into vivid, textured masterpieces.
The exhibition boasts 75 fabric-cut creations, each a unique exploration of landscapes, human figures, and the emotions they evoke. Among these are large-scale landscape paintings, measuring 200cm x 90cm, that showcase the artist’s technical prowess and dedication to her chosen medium.
In addition to these stunning works, Thuc presents a special collection of fabrics accumulated over the years, offering a glimpse into the materials that have influenced her creative path. The artist will also treat visitors to a live demonstration, sharing the secrets behind her distinctive fabric-cutting technique.

Hanoi’s romantic allure captured in fabric by Tran Thanh Thuc.
Thuc often draws inspiration from her beloved hometown, with iconic landmarks such as Long Bien Bridge, the Opera House, St. Joseph’s Cathedral, and Hoan Kiem Lake featuring prominently in her work. Notable pieces include a serene portrayal of Hanoi’s Quan Chuong Gate in spring and an old Hanoi scene with an electric tram passing by Hoan Kiem Lake, evoking nostalgia for the city’s beauty of decades past.
Speaking to The Hanoi Chronicle, Thuc reveals that local markets and tailors are her primary sources for fabric. She also collects brocades woven by ethnic women, silk from mulberry silkworms, and imported fabrics, ensuring a diverse range of textures and patterns. The artist’s dedication to her craft and the use of unique materials contribute to the exclusivity of her paintings, resulting in higher prices than traditional artworks.
“My passion drives me to invest in these precious materials,” she shares. “I don’t regret the extra cost because it adds to the uniqueness of my creations.”
