Mark your calendars, as the Ba Dinh District People’s Committee is set to unveil this exciting new destination by October 10, 2024. Spanning an area of approximately 3.6 hectares, with a circumference of 750 meters, Ngoc Khanh Lake is an oasis of tranquility amidst the urban jungle. Its surrounding pathways and promenades provide the perfect setting for a leisurely stroll, a quiet moment of reflection, or a lively gathering with friends and family.
The district plans to pedestrianize the area around the lake from Friday evenings to Sunday nights, offering a much-needed respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. And there are even discussions about potentially keeping the area car-free permanently after the initial pilot program.

A Tribute to Hanoi’s Rich History
But more than just a place for relaxation, the Ngoc Khanh Lake Pedestrian Zone holds a deeper significance. The area pays homage to the historic Giang Vo Military School, once a thriving center for martial arts, military strategies, and high-level exercises during the Thang Long era (now Hanoi). Artifacts unearthed during archaeological excavations, now safely housed in the Hanoi Museum, attest to the area’s rich military past.

A Boost for Local Businesses
In addition to its historical allure, the Ngoc Khanh Lake Pedestrian Zone is designed to stimulate commercial activities and provide a platform for local businesses to thrive. With a total investment of nearly VND30 billion (US$1.2 million) funded by the district, the area will feature mobile stalls offering a diverse range of OCOP products and a vibrant street culture during the weekends.
The commercial zone encompasses not just the lake itself but also Pham Huy Thong Street and eight connecting alleys, seamlessly linking it to nearby landmarks and neighborhoods. Ba Dinh District has carefully planned the layout to ensure a smooth flow of pedestrian traffic, with a minimum width of 5 meters for the main path, while also considering fire safety and parking requirements.

During the opening period, mobile stalls will also line part of Pham Huy Thong Street, joining the existing and planned permanent stalls. Already, approximately 118 businesses have signed up to establish a presence in the zone, a testament to its potential for success.
The Ngoc Khanh Lake Pedestrian Zone is more than just a place—it’s an experience. It seamlessly blends the past with the present, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and modern amenities. So, whether you’re a history buff, a leisure seeker, or a local business owner, this new destination has something for everyone.
